چکیده
Abstract Observations from spaceborne microwave (MW) and infrared (IR) passive sensors are the backbone of current satellite meteorology, essential for data assimilation into modern numerical weather prediction climate benchmarking. While MW IR observations space offer complementary features with respect to cloud properties, their synergy investigation is currently underexplored, despite presence both on operational meteorological satellites such as EUMETSAT Polar System (EPS) MetOp series. As such, several key microphysical properties not part products available EPS sensors. In addition, Second Generation (EPS-SG) series, scheduled launch starting 2024 onward, will carry Microwave Sounder (MWS) IASI Next (IASI-NG), enhancing spatial spectral resolutions thus capacity retrieve properties. This article presents Combined MWS IASI-NG Soundings Cloud Properties (ComboCloud) project, funded by overall objective specify, prototype, validate algorithms retrieval (e.g., water content drop effective radius) observations. The rationale, algorithm design, results obtained exploiting simulated EPS-SG sensors, quantifying benefits be expected MW–IR new generation

Atmospheric Electricity and Cloud Microphysics
The terrestrial atmospheric electrical system covers a range of dimensional scales, from charged molecular clusters to convective cloud systems. Charge-exchange associated with thunderclouds leads to positive charge in the upper conductive regions of the atmosphere and a net negative charge on the planetary surface. In non-thunderstorm regions, a vertical ionic current flows, replenishing the a...
متن کاملBlack carbon radiative heating effects on cloud microphysics and implications for the aerosol indirect effect: 2. Cloud microphysics
This work examines the effect of black carbon (BC) radiative heating on cloud droplet formation. Changes in cloud droplet concentration and cloud albedo due to the presence of black carbon are computed for different cases of aerosol size distributions, meteorological conditions, BC mixing state, and aerosol composition. We examine the effect of three new mechanisms (that result from BC heating)...
متن کاملPhysically based two-moment bulkwater parametrization for warm-cloud microphysics
A two-moment bulkwater parametrization scheme for warm-cloud microphysics is developed via statistical analyses of results from a detailed parcel model. This computationally ef cient scheme is quite accurate and produces bulkwater properties which resemble the results from a fully explicit microphysical model. It responds sensitively to the effect of aerosol types on the cloud drop number conc...

Cloud Microphysics Retrieval Using S-Band Dual-Polarization Radar Measurements
The recent deployment of multiparameter, polarimetric radars provides the impetus for development of microphysical retrievals. The primary objective of this paper is to describe a particle classification technique that makes use of polarimetric radar observations. The particle classification technique is computationally simple enough to be implemented for real-time research and operational fiel...
